Description

Wesley Breedlove’s Prospect Hill presents an archaeological and historical analysis of Greenville’s origins, focusing on Prospect Hill—the site of Lemuel Alston’s 18th-century mansion. Once Cherokee land, Greenville saw early settlement by Scotch-Irish immigrants after colonial treaties. Alston’s estate later became central to the town's development, passing to Vardry McBee and others. In 1990, archaeological discoveries on the site revealed colonial artifacts and prehistoric tools, including a rare grooved axe from 3,000–1,000 B.C. The excavation unearthed remnants of Alston’s outbuilding, shedding light on both Native American and early settler lifeways in upcountry South Carolina.
