The History of the Greenville City Fire DepartmentEntry/Object ID
RG134-09-05Description
The Greenville City Fire Department began as a volunteer force around 1840 with hand-pumped engines like the Neptune. Over the 19th century, it evolved through major fires, community support, and growing professionalism. Key developments included the formation of racially segregated companies, adoption of steam engines, use of horses, and public fire tournaments. The establishment of the Paris Mountain Water System and fire hydrants in the 1890s greatly improved fire response. In 1902, Greenville transitioned to a paid fire department, modernized with telephones, motorized equipment, and new regulations, culminating in the first motorized fire apparatus in South Carolina by 1910.Collection
