United Ministries, originally Greenville Urban Ministry, began in the 1960s from outreach work by Buncombe Street United Methodist Church. Led by Rev. Harlan Wilson, it developed multiple community-focused programs including child development, drug abuse support, emergency aid, and senior nutrition. It later expanded into housing, homelessness services, employment readiness, and block partnerships. Merging with the Christian Service Center, it became ecumenical, receiving support from many denominations. Under Rev. Beth Templeton’s leadership, the organization secured a permanent home, initiated innovative housing and volunteer programs, and restructured governance. By 1990, United Ministries offered diverse services through a strong volunteer and faith-based network.Collection
