Lawrence Peter Hollis (1883–1977) was a key figure in shaping mill village education in Greenville, South Carolina. Born in Chester County, he overcame limited rural schooling to attend South Carolina College, where he displayed strong leadership. Influenced by industrialist Thomas Fleming Parker, Hollis embraced progressive education to improve the lives of textile mill workers. As welfare secretary and later superintendent of the Parker School District, he introduced child-centered, community-based learning and vocational training. Though deeply committed to uplifting mill communities, Hollis’s educational vision often prioritized industrial preparedness over broader democratic ideals of progressive education. His legacy remains significant in Greenville’s history.Collection
