Description

Gary Thompson’s paper explores the rich history of Jugtown, South Carolina, a major 19th- and early 20th-century center for alkaline-glazed stoneware. Located in Greenville County along the Tyger River, Jugtown was home to skilled potters like the Henson, Tapp, and Atkins families. Unique for its diverse glazes and for including Rich Williams—the only known Black potter in any Jugtown—its pottery served utilitarian needs before shifting to artware in response to market changes. Though once nearly forgotten, Jugtown's legacy is being revived through research and museum exhibits, highlighting its significance in Southern ceramic traditions.
