An Account of Greenville During the War Between the States and ReconstructionEntry/Object ID
RG134-11-04Description
During the Civil War, Greenville, South Carolina, strongly supported the Confederacy, despite initial Unionist leanings. The county contributed over 2,000 soldiers and played a key role in manufacturing arms and supplies. Local women organized aid societies and hospitals, while the community endured inflation and shortages. Although largely spared from Union attacks, Stoneman's raid in May 1865 brought brief occupation and looting. During Reconstruction, Greenville saw federal troop presence and the Freedmen’s Bureau, but avoided significant violence. The local economy gradually revived, boosted by railroads and industry, leading Greenville into the prosperity of the New South.Collection
