RG134-11-06Description
George Salmon, an influential early figure in Greenville County, South Carolina, was a Revolutionary War veteran and surveyor who played a vital role in mapping and settling the region. Beginning in 1784, Salmon laid out thousands of acres for veterans and settlers, including lands within present-day Greenville. He created Greenville’s first known map, participated in boundary surveys between South Carolina and North Carolina, and served as a legislator, justice, militia officer, and teacher. Despite professional success, Salmon faced personal and financial struggles later in life. His surveys ultimately shaped over 14% of Greenville County’s land, leaving a lasting legacy.Collection
