Description

William J. McGlothlin was a Southern Baptist theologian, educator, and Progressive reformer who served as president of Furman University (1919–1933) and the Southern Baptist Convention (1930–1932). A champion of liberal theology and academic freedom, McGlothlin opposed fundamentalism, supported racial cooperation, and sought to reconcile science and faith. Influenced by European theological scholarship, he advocated for a simplified, personal Baptist doctrine. At Furman, he pushed for institutional accreditation, faculty expansion, and infrastructure development. Despite setbacks, including the Great Depression and a fatal car accident in 1933, his legacy reflects a commitment to education, reform, and religious liberty during a transformative era.
