Brushy Creek: The Alexander McBee Country HomeEntry/Object ID
RG134-11-10Description
Brushy Creek, the country home of Alexander McBee near Greenville, was part of a 672-acre tract deeded to his father, Vardry McBee, in 1815. Originally a farmhouse, it became Alexander and Henrietta McBee’s beloved retreat and later permanent home. A devoted son and civic leader, Alexander spent his life managing family enterprises, improving postwar conditions, and quietly helping others, including emancipated slaves. Though overshadowed by his father’s legacy, his efforts in community service and business were significant. He died in 1897 at Brushy Creek, remembered as a kind, honorable man. Henrietta’s love had fulfilled him; her death left him heartbroken.Collection
