Waddy Thompson, Jr., born in 1798 near Easley, South Carolina, was a prominent lawyer, politician, and diplomat. He began practicing law in Edgefield, married Emmala Butler, and launched a political career in Greenville, supporting nullification and aligning with John C. Calhoun—though later opposing him. Thompson served in the U.S. House and as Minister to Mexico (1842–1844), where he improved diplomatic relations and secured the release of Texan prisoners. He returned to Greenville, built a Paris Mountain estate, and published Recollections of Mexico. Financial losses after the Civil War forced his move to Florida, where he died in 1868.Collection
