The Battle of the Great Cane BreakEntry/Object ID
RG134-12-12Description
The Battle of the Great Cane Brake, fought on December 22, 1775, near present-day Greenville, South Carolina, was a brief but pivotal Revolutionary War skirmish. Patriot forces under Colonel William Thomson launched a surprise attack on Loyalist troops led by Patrick Cunningham camped along the Reedy River. Despite being forewarned, the Loyalists quickly surrendered after minimal resistance. This encounter was part of the larger "Snow Campaign," which aimed to quell Loyalist uprisings in the Backcountry. The victory helped secure the region for the Patriot cause and kept the area quiet for several years, bolstering revolutionary momentum in South Carolina.Collection
