Courtney Tollison’s article, New Home for Furman University, traces the university’s evolution from its early 19th-century roots in Edgefield to its historic move in 1958 from downtown Greenville to its current campus north of the city. Initially drawn to Greenville by health, economic, and logistical advantages—and aided by the philanthropy of Vardry McBee—Furman developed a synergistic relationship with the city. Despite setbacks during the Civil War and Great Depression, Furman survived, merged with the Greenville Woman’s College, and eventually outgrew its urban setting. The bold relocation allowed consolidation and expansion, shaping Furman into a nationally respected liberal arts institution.Collection
