Description

The Greenville County Historical Society was founded in 1962 to preserve the county’s history and heritage, following earlier preservation efforts in the 1920s. Spearheaded by Furman University’s Laura Smith Ebaugh, the Society promoted original research, public exhibits, and publications such as The Proceedings and Papers. It hosted lectures, preserved documents, and campaigned for historic preservation. A key acquisition was the Coxe Collection—over 120,000 historic photographs. Over the years, it gained a permanent office, hired executive directors, and launched a website. The Society remains a vital guardian of Greenville’s history, continuing to engage the public through programs, publications, and preservation efforts.
