RG134-01-01Description
In the mid-19th century, Greenville’s development was fueled by the arrival of railroads, especially the Charlotte and Atlanta Airline Railway. Industrial growth spurred demand for coal, prompting efforts to build a mountain-crossing railroad, which became known as the “Swamp Rabbit.” Despite ambitious plans, underfunding and setbacks limited its reach to Marietta. The line changed ownership frequently and was cherished for its quirky charm and service to local communities. Ultimately, it became the Greenville and Northern Railway. Though its mountain dream failed, the Swamp Rabbit left a lasting legacy in Greenville’s history and identity.Collection
