Vardry McBee, often called the “Father of Greenville,” purchased 11,028 acres in 1815 and transformed a small village into a thriving city. A visionary industrialist and philanthropist, McBee founded flour, paper, cotton, and woolen mills, established chain stores, promoted agriculture, and supported education, including the founding of Furman University and the Greenville Academies. He was instrumental in railroad development, contributing large sums and serving briefly as president of a major railway. A Unionist turned secessionist late in life, McBee’s commitment to public good and progress defined Greenville’s early growth. He remained active well into his 80s before retiring.Collection
