The National Archives traces its origins to ancient Greece, but the modern concept began with France’s Archives Nationale in 1790, establishing public access and state responsibility for preserving records. England followed in 1838, and the U.S. developed its own archives gradually, culminating in the 1934 National Archives Act under FDR. The Archives now manages vast federal records, deciding what to preserve, destroy, or store. Only 1% become permanent archives. The building houses 15 million cubic feet, supports research, genealogy, and microfilm services, and includes maps and historic documents. It serves as a vital resource for preserving and accessing America’s documentary heritage.Collection
