Description

Medical history in Greenville County began slowly due to its late settlement, with the first physicians arriving in the early 1800s. Notable early doctors like Dr. Andrew Berry Crook, Dr. William L.M. Austin, and Dr. Benjamin Few were well-educated, civically engaged, and deeply respected. Despite limited scientific advancements, these doctors practiced with compassion and dedication. Greenville’s medical community grew steadily, with fifty-one doctors by 1882. Many trained at the Medical College of South Carolina. Their legacy laid the foundation for organized medicine, hospitals, and modern practices that emerged in the early 20th century, marking Greenville's transition into a new era of healthcare.
