Furman University Moves its CampusEntry/Object ID
RG134-03-01Description
Following World War II, Furman University faced overcrowding and outdated facilities, prompting the decision to move to a new, unified campus. Planning began in the late 1940s, and by 1950, a 973-acre site on Poinsett Highway was purchased. Construction began in 1953, and over the next decade, the campus transformed into a modern institution with academic buildings, dormitories, athletic facilities, and a man-made lake. The relocation consolidated Furman's operations, enabled expansion, and preserved traditions like the Old College building and victory bell. By 1960, the campus symbolized Furman’s growth, modernization, and enduring legacy.Collection
