2019.004.001Description
Early home-schooling item. The wooden box is stored flat and opens to show a scroll with multiple educational topics. The scroll section of the desk can be secured so that it remains upright during use. There are box-like areas below the scroll which were used to store pencils, pens, chalk, erasers, books, and papers. A spring is mounted on either side below the scroll that can be used to hold chalk and pencils. A map (copyright 1923) is pasted on the outside of the box. The copyright date is 1913 for the scroll, but the original desk was patented in 1885. There is no specific Grinnell story, other than the donor's children played with the desk under supervision.Provenance
