Civil War Period bayonet; one end has a hollow cylinder that is 3" long which fit over muzzle of rifle, cylinder has an "L" shaped opening on side and has a screw on clamp around it; blade is 18" long and tapers to a point, top side of blade has a slight concave surface and underside has a ridge running down the center.

04/30/19 - While it served many purposes, bayonets were designed to fit over the muzzle of a rifle and serve as a spear in close range combat. Its raised blade allowed the soldier to continue loading and firing his weapon with the bayonet attached, unlike previous designs. When not used in combat, soldiers often used their bayonets as a cooking utensil and tent spike.
