The second court house, which was located where the current courthouse stands, was built on the land gifted to the county by Edward Toner and Jeremiah Bennett in 1849. The county accepted the gift, and the land came with the following conditions: the county was to grade and fence the lot within 12 months and was to erect a new courthouse within 5 years. The courthouse was designed by Edwin May, most known for the Indiana State House design, and was completed in 1854. The Victorian structure was made of brick and stone, contained a tower with a clock and bell, and the courtroom was located at the center of the structure, with two wings for the jury and offices.
The courthouse was town (sic) down in the fall of 1935 and was replaced by the current courthouse in 1936, which was part of the Works Progress Administration program."Collection
