Civil war period canteen; basically two saucer shaped pieces of metal about 7 1/2" across joinded together at edges; drinking spout is 1" high with a lip; and there are three pieces of metal (one on a side and one at the bottom) to secure carrying straps to. This canteen has been altered. Front and back are painted green, the strap brackets and mouthpiece are painted gold. On what appears to be front of canteen a primitive style battle scene is painted, back of mouth piece is scratched 1861.
Had old collection number 31 and records for it read: "Soldiers canteen used during Civil War. Donated by Mrs. O. W. Cotton. May 10, 1937"
04/30/19 - This Civil War era canteen has been altered. Front and back are painted green, strap brackets and mouthpiece are painted gold. On what appears to be the front of the canteen, a primitive style battle scene is painted. The year 1861 is etched on the back of the mouthpiece.Collection
