CartDescription
Single seat, two wheeled riding cart designed to bepulled by a goat. Wheels are metal rimmed with wire spokes and are bolted to a metal axle. Also secured to axle are two pieces of wood runnign the length of cart. Goat fit between these poles. At very back of poles a wire is stretched between them as a brace. About 18" in front of wire is a double wood brace. Each plole has two leather loops to accomodate harness. The seat is directly over the axle and is a boaard riveted to 2 pieces of bent strap iron.
Cart built by a Shelbyville blacksmith (John Miller) and used in the goat cart races at the 1911 Shelby Co. Fair. Russell Cherry owned the goat cart and he took 3rd place driving a goat names "Billy C". Informatin supplied by donor who is R. Cherrry's widow. Another racer in the 1911 conteast was Wilbur Show who later became inportant to the Indy 500 race. Shaw and Cherry were friends.
Shaw spent summers in Shelbyville visiting his Aunt Lena Shaw who lived on the corner of Harrison and McKenzie St.Collection
