All wood construction; top made of 3 boards; top extends 3" on all side over the base section; front of base section has 3 decorative vertical columns and 2 horizontal panels which have incised circular decoration in center; ends are same except only 2 columns and panels are vertical; half round piece at bottom of base section; decorative molding pieces on exterior are nailed on w/nails being clinced on inside surface; exterior has a dark finish; inside surfaces not touched; shelves probably pine, counter seams to be a hardwood.
This was a counter in the Goodman Department Store, owned by Abe Goodman, which stood on the southeast corner of the Public Square and Washington St. at lot No. 30 beginning in 1919 or 1920.
In 1935, the name was changed to Goodman-Jester Department Store, and was expanded into the No. 32 lot.
The business was moved to the Pitman Building in 1962, and in 1974, the No 30 and 32 lots became the First Federal Savings and Loan.
In 1989, First Federal Savings and Loan became Shelby County Savings.
Currently, the First Merchant's Bank is located on the No. 30 and 32 lots.Collection
