CoverletDescription
Woven jacquard coverlet featuring black and muted tone floral and botanical motifs on a cream background with fringed edges. This was made by Klein and Sons weaving business on Shelbyville town square in 1850. The Jcquard loom was an invention in France in the early 1800’s using a chain of perforated pattern cards. The customers brought them their hand dyed homespun yarns to be woven into a coverlet of the pattern they chose, with the name and date woven into the corner. By the time of the Civil War cotton warp was difficult to get and tastes were different. This style coverlet did not fit in with the ornate style of furniture which were popular.Context
