Sheet iron container, plated in tin inside and out; lid is hinged and lipped so fits (originally) over the side of the case; appears to be made from 3 pieces of sheet iron, 1 piece is bottom, 2nd piece makes up the sides and is secured to bottom by being crimped over, one vertical seam in sides; 3rd piece is the lid; lid originally secured by a wire through catches on the front; box has horizontal ribs and stenciled on all sides "FRAGILE EGGS"
paper card inside crate identifies as a product of the Metal Egg Crate Co. Fredericksburg, A and patented Nov. 20, 1917 and March 25, 1920.
paper that fits inside lid is addressed to "Mr. & Mrs. Burton F. Swain, Jr./SS Queen Mary/Room A 97/ on 7" according to donor these were his parents and they were on a cruise around Australia and his mother did not like the eggs on the SS Mary so she had 6 doz Shelby County eggs sent to her.
