Name/Title

Dorothy Vernon

Secondary Title

or, the Beauty of Haddon Hall

Description

A paperback book, titled "Dorothy Vernon" in large red letters outlined in black. Above the book's title reads, "Monogram Series, No. " and "25 Cents." Beneath the title is an illustration of a woman with brown hair, standing before an ivy-covered stone house. She dons Edwardian garb, including a vibrant red corset with white ruffled sleeve caps and matching skirt, long white gloves, a white ruff collar, and a white feather hat. In her right hand, she carries an unknown object. Beneath the illustration reads the secondary title, "or, the Beauty of Haddon Hall," in green lettering. The publishing company also appears at the bottom of the front cover in green lettering, "Street & Smith, Publishers, New-." Due to a rip at the bottom of the front cover, the last word, presumably "York," cannot be read.

Context

This dime novel is an interpretation of the story of Dorothy Vernon, attributed to Henry Hastings (possibly among the Earls of Huntingdon and the English noble Hastings family) and published by Street & Smith likely in 1902 or 1903. It possibly imitates Charles Major's "Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall." The third page reads, "Dorothy Vernon, the Beauty of Haddon Hall / This delightful, original romance was first published early in the present year, and must not be confounded with Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall by Mr. Charles Major, a later and far inferior novel."
