A black leather pouch with a fold over flap; there is a main compartment for carrying large items and there is another compartment in the flap for carrying flatter items; there is a buckle at top of pouch to secure a leather cover for the top and a buckle at bottom of pouch to secure the flap, except the leather strap on the flap is broken; strap which secured shoulder strap to top of pouch is also broken.
Had old collection number 62 and records for it read: "Officers haversack used by Capt. Luman Jones, Co. E 79th Indiana during Civil War. Presented by Thomas F. Chafee on the same Company.
Luman Jones was born in Ohio but moved to Shelbyville at an unknown date. He and his family can be found on the census record for Shelbyville in 1860.
04/30/19 - Officer's haversack used by Capt. Luman Jones, Co. E 79th Indiana Infantry Regiment during the Civil War to carry various supplies and personal items. Luman, a resident of Shelby County, was commissioned as an officer in the regiment on September 2, 1862 and was promoted to full captain on April 8, 1864.Collection
