Hole diggerDescription
Device may be a post hole digger, unsure exactly what it is; handle is an iron bar, one end has been bent back on itself to from a loop for a hand grip, base of handle is split into a fork shape with each of the 2 pieces attaching to a rounded piece of sheet iron that is 5" high x 6 7/8" diameter; ends of rounded sheet metal piece do not join, has a tapering gap between the ends
As near as can figure out tool was used by hitting it into the ground, picking up giving it a slight rotating turn and hitting it into the ground again; when round metal part at bottom was full of compacted dirt, tool was struck against any handy object to knock loose and process started again; appears tool was forced in to ground by strength alone--no marks to indicate it was ever struck with hammer, etc.Collection
