Description

George Jordan was an early Shelby County collector and amatuer archaeologist. Early archaic winged butterfly bannerstone. Slate colored with dark rings running on surface. Butterfly shaped. Has a hole drilled through the middle lengthwise. Middle is 1 1/8" square & 1 1/8" deep. Butterfly wings have been carved fron this square. Wings are flat on the inside, across the top and curve into a half circle. These are not quite the same shape or thickness. In 2000, Teresa Putty, Paleontologist, dated this artifact as Archaic Period, 8000 BC - 6000 BC. 01/20/2018 Identified by Luke Cord as Winged Butterfly Bannerstone (Early Archaic Period 8000-6000 BP).
