Indian ArtifactDescription
George Jordan was an early Shelby County collector and amatuer archaeologist. Celt, dark slate, almost black. Rough surface in unpolished areas with minute pock marks, holding lighter colored materials. Shape is like a flattened cylinder, one end is polished, tapers to a narrow cutting edge. Opposite end appears to be naturally rounded and smaller than largest part of tool, rounded part fits nicely in palm of hand. Some evidence that polishing on rounded end is from usage. In 2000, Teresa Putty, Paleontologist, dated this artifact as Archaic Period, 8000-6000 BC.
