NUMBER 127
INDIANA DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL AWARD
1. Under the act of Legislature, Section 45-2601 Burns Indiana Statures, annotated 1953, The Indiana Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service is award to: MAJOR GENERAL JOHN S. ANDERSON, 01 283 632, in recognition of his outstanding performance of duty at The Adjutant General, State of Indiana, from 11 January 1961 to 15 November 1964. Throughout this period Major General Anderson demonstrated professional competence, aggressive leadership and outstanding administrative proficiency in the execution of his duties.
2. Under General Anderson's guidance, his coordination with higher military authorities and management of available resources, the following accomplishments were realized:
a. Tactical elements of the Indiana Air National Guard were successfully and expediently converted to Federal service for the Berlin Build-up in 1962, with a major element being deployed to France. During this time both Air National Guard Bases served as host to federalized elements in their State status and most successfully accomplished this mission.
b. Under General Anderson's guidance, the strength of the Indiana Army National Guard was raised from a low of 9515 on 31 July 1963 to an all-time high of 10743 by 1 February 1964 prior to a forced reduction due to ceiling limitation.
c. Through his efforts, training facilities at Camp Atterbury were increased and improved to the extent that brigade level assemblies can now be conducted.
d. General Anderson was responsible for Indiana being selected as a Test State for weekend training assemblies, which materially contributed to the establishment of weekend training assemblies for all National Guard units in the nation.
e. General Anderson was very instrumental in Indiana's Army National Guard being selected to participate in the most complex portion of Guardlift I, in which a brigade conducted Annual Field Training in Puerto Rico, a Puerto Rican brigade was supported by Indiana at Camp Grayling, Michigan, and a battalion test was simultaneously conducted at Camp Grayling.
f. As a result of General Anderson's excellent management of the National Guard, Indiana was selected to participate in Project "Management Action Control" for two years, and from this evolved a better method for financial management of Federal funds.
g. General Anderson and numerous members of his staff have been called upon to participate or be chairmen of special study projects in the National Guard Bureau and have thereby established great prestige for the Indiana National Guard.
3. Through General Anderson's guidance, coordination, management and successful accomplishments of the most difficult tasks and assignments, the capability and readiness of the Indiana National Guard to perform either State or Federal missions are at an all-time high. Likewise, the prestige and respect for the Indiana National Guard at national level equals or exceeds that of any other state.
4. The diligence, wisdom and personal sacrifices contributed by General Anderson to the welfare and protection of his country and State, together with the invaluable guidance given to the Indiana National Guard are in keeping with the highest tradition of the Indiana National Guard and reflect great credit upon himself, the military service and the State of Indiana.Use
