A: Navy military jacket in navy blue is double-breasted with gold buttons; two wide gold braids with a narrow gold braid between and a gold star above the braid on the cuff indicate Lt. Commander's rank. Collar has notched lapels, one open breast pocket, two open side pockets, open inside pocket on right and small buttoned pocket in back lining. Ralph W. Douglass, Jr. was a Shelbyville native who attended the Merchant Marine progaram in Kingsport, New York about 1943; after graduation he held reserve commission in the U.S. Navy and then volunteered as deck officer and navigator. Donated items are associated with his career in the Navy and/or Merchant Marines.Use
