Brown leather Navy flight jacket with front zipper, two patch pockets with button flaps. It has a brown simulated-fur collar with U.S.N. stamped in silver on underside. Knitted cuffs at sleeve edge, knitted waistband. Label inside of jacket reads: "Buaer-U.S. Navy/G-1 Flight Jacket/Spec 55J14 (AER)/Contract No. N3835-39943/Star Sports Wear Mfg. Co./Lynn, Mass." Ralph W. Douglass, Jr. was a Shelbyville native who attended the Merchant Marine program in Kingsport, NY around 1943. After graduating he held a reserve commission in U.S.N. and then volunteered as a Deck Officer-Navigator. Donated items are associated with his career in U.S.N. on Merchant Marine. He got the jacket while serving on the supply ship USS Jupiter during the Korean conflict.Use
