Description

a device made of tinned sheet iron with a copper bottom used to prepare canned foods; front has two hinged doors that latch on the left and swing to the right; the top door is stamped conservo; both sides have 2 vertical bars through which rivets are attached to form shelf brackets for the inside; back is plain; top rises in 3 levels to point where there is an escape valve for steam; one corner of top has a well with a hole at the bottom which attaches to a tube on the inside that feeds to the copper bottom; two wire handles with wood bails cut for finger grooves, 4 selves inside. bottom is stamped: "MODEL 25, MANUFACTURED BY THE SWARTZBAUGH MFG. CO. CONSERVO, TOLEDO OHIO , PATENTED" according to donor this was used for only a few years by her family as shortly after it was marketed Purdue University cautioned against its use because could not produce enough heat to adequately sterlize. Used by putting on stove; putting canned food on shelvers filling bottom with water and closing doors as water boiled it made steam and was supposed to kill bacteria.
