Description

Tintype on a thin piece of sheet iron, unsure of medium used to paint the image. Subject in a woman, hair arranged in waves on side, pulled behind ears, spit curls on forehead, blue eyes, earring visible in right ear, earring is edged in gold and appears to have a medallion in center. Garment is painted black and lacks detail, wearing a piece of white lace around neck, lace extends to jaw line, lace held in place with a gold color chain which ends in a medallion that hangs at bosom. Marks: a piece of backing paper was printed "The/Pennellograph/secured by copyright, 1875/painted only by/L. H. NEWELL,/at his art studio, 3952 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA." According to donor this image and 87.18.3 were in a double frame found among her grandfather's things, no one in the family was able to identify the subjects, could be members of either the King or Means family. Frame was given to a family member. Donation, 03/12/1987.
