Wood board, dressed smooth and true; in center is a metal plate 6 1/8: long x 3 7/8" high held in polace by 4 screws; center of plate is 3" diameter opening that has piece of glass behind it and behind glass is a circular brass plate which has been marked off into 8 sectons with 16 lines per section, there is a needle style marker; brass plate on back screws in to ho9ld gauge in place.
Marks: metal plate on back engraved "B.F. St. John/Shelbyville/Pat Sep 5, 1865"
Size 28 1/8" x 3 7/8"
Special function: suspect worked by means of weight; if placed on something not level the weight would seek to right itself and in so doing would show pull the needle pointer with it showing the degree of out of square.
