Name/Title

Major, William S. Mansion Drawing Room

Description

Greyscale photograph in landscape format on cardboard mount. Image is of the formal drawing room of the William S. Major Mansion on W. Washington Street prior to becoming the hospital. Ceiling is white and has a plaster medallion in the center from which an ornate crystal chandellier hangs. Strings of crystal beads have been draped from the chandellier to the walls and corners of the room. There are four windows with plain white blinds drawn to the sills. The carpet looks light enough to be white. The furniture in the room has been draped in light-colored fitted covers. The walls appear to be papered in a subtle vertical stripe with ivy detail at ceiling and draping downward. Large fireplace on right, palm plants, a rocking chair at center. The whole appearance of the room suggests the height of summer and an attempt to make the room feel icy and cool. Letter from donor: Dear Sir/Madam, Mary Elizabeth (Staples) Clark wrote the staement on the reverse side of the enclosed photograph. Her mother was Frances Brownie (Wadley) (Staples) Glessner, daughter of Samuel Parker Wadley and Mary Elizabeth Cory. Mary Elizabeth Cory and Sarah Frances Cory, who married Willia. S. Major were sisters. So, Sarah Frances was Great "Aunt Fanny" to Mary Elizabeth (Staples) Clark. The picture was among a number of things left to my husband, a nephew by marriage. I am sending it to the Shelby County Historical Society where its significance may be more meaningful. Sincerely yours, Priscilla Wilson (Mrs. George G. Wilson II)
