Description

Serving plate, part of an 8-piece set. Rough unglazed underside, a rim 5/8" high, plate decorated with china painting consisting of a gold band with brown line under it around the rim, near outside edge of plate is white band 1-1/8" wide edged with brown lines top and bottom and decorated with sections of 2 horizontal gold lines with ends turned to each other and brown ellipsoidal figures between lines alternating with brown vertical rectangles. Underside is stamped with small rectangle which has "TAV" inside it and below rectangle is illegible word and the "France."

by Charlotte & Marian Jones, as a gift from their aunt.

Context

According to the donors, this tea set given to donors by their aunt, Mrs. Charles Spiegel. Set was hand painted to match by Etta Wingate. Underside is signed with brown ink: Etta Wingate. Etta and her twin sister Eva were maiden ladies living in Shelbyville. Miss Eva taught school and Etta kept house and did china painting.
