A: WW I gas mask & canister. B: anti-fogging tube. C: carring haversack. Mask consists of yellow canister with a white flexible cloth tube leading to a rubber mask that fits over the face, held by an elasctic band. Haversack carries mask. Tube of anti-fog for eye pieces. Top of filter canister marked "PMWCO" & "204x" Haversack has what appears to be "988400" on the front flap. On back side in red ink is "J. G. Lemmon 3rd M. G. Bn. M. Dept't 1st Div"

04/30/19 - Gas mask and canister issued to John G. Lemmon. Private Lemmon was a part of the medical detachment of the Third Machine Gun Battalion, First Division. He departed from New York on September 14, 1918 and left France o August 26, 1919, returning to Shelbyville the following month. WWI saw the first large scale use of chemical weapons in warfare making gas masks an essential for soldiers.Collection
