Description

Man's hat, derby style, black, stiff felt, black ribbon hatband with bow on left side; brown leather band inside brim; ribbon tie in back of inside leather brim. Glued to top inside crown black and silver label with gold letters.

Context

This derby was the trademark of the beloved physician. Among his patients were Rose and Gus Ellerman and their grandchildren Richard and Marllyn Ray. During his office visits, Richard would admire Dr. Sam's hat and say that when he grew up he would like to have a hat like Dr. Sam's. After his death, Mrs. Ellerman was informed that Dr. Sam meant the hat to be given to Richard who kept it until its donation to the Grover Center.
