front and back covers are identical in a brown/burgundy color with an outside square with V shaped inserts in black and a black indented oval in the center; 4 white glass buttons are tacked one in each corner of the raised pattern; the spine has black trim with the word "Album" printed in gold; the hinged clasp is in good condition with an attached leaf and small vine ; album contains 21 leaves, 20 for a carte d'viste photo on each side for a space of 40 photos; leaf edges are golden with an embossed flower pattern.
Spine shows signs of wear at upper and lower ends and center area; lower left glass button is broken; leaves are in good condition with some yellowing and spotting throughout.
A paper butterfly and a paper print of a house have been attached to the inside front and back cover; attached to the front cover is a green label: "BOOK COVER / PATENTED / July 5th, 1864 / October 17th, 1862"Context
Attached to lower right corner of 1st leaf on tan paper is printed "H Hoban", believed to be Hopkins E. Hoban.
His obituary is as follows:
"Hopkins E. Hoban age eighty, resident of Indiana practically all of his life, and a veteran of the civil war, died February 25, 1926 at 11:40 o’clock at the home of his son, Richard Hoban in Noble township. His death was caused by bronchial pneumonia and followed an illness of a week. Mr. Hoban was born October 24, 1845 in New York state. When five years old he had come to Indiana with his parents, and had since lived in this state, and for most of the time in Shelby county. At the age of seventeen he enlisted in the Union army, and served in the civil war. He taught school for several terms at the close of the war. In 1871 he was married to Helen Buxton. Two children were born to them, both of whom survive. They are Bernard Hoban, who is in the United States Army, and Mrs. Ed K. (Hortense) Montgomery, of this city. In 1892 he was married to Jennie Eades. Two children were born to them survive. They are Richard Hoban of this county, and Mrs. Edna Bulpin, of Los Angeles. Mr. Hoban also leaves one brother, Theodore Hoban, of this county; and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Mason, of Noble township and Mrs. Mariah Durbin, of Waldron. Three grandchildren survive."Collection
