Jack plane. Wooden block plane with an added-on handle to make it a jack plane. Has one cutting edge of iron which fits in the throat and is held in place by a wood wedge. Blade is 2.125" wide at the cutting edge. Front end of plane is stamped: "CARNES/N. RICHMOND, O" According to donor, the plane was used by Andrew J. Foster in Kansas around 1833. One of his daughters, Sarah Ann Smith, came to Moral Twp., Shelby County, some time prior to 1910. Her son Edgar Paul Smith lived in Shelby County and donor is his widow. Andrew Foster also came to Shelby County at some time and that is how the plane stayed in the Smith family.Use
