Name/Title
Point, ProjectileDescription
Projectile Point. Buck Creek Barbed. These points are characterized by the strongly barbed shoulders, a stemmed base and a triangular blade. This specimen shows all three. Also characteristic is the beveling of the lateral edges of the stem and base, on this example it extends about 1/3 of the way up the stem. Also there is a small amount of cortex on the corner of the base. Color is red. Buck Creek Barbed points are diagnostic of the "Terminal Archaic" phase of the Late Archaic Period and may extend into the Early Woodland Period. Reference: "Stone Age Spear and Arrow Points", Noel D. Justice, p.183. Justice points out that some of these points have been found in cache situations, thus giving them a ceremonial function. These cache blades are thinner than the average and show large hertzian cone flake scars, however, I have never seen others of this type and connot compare the thickness of this point with others.Use
