This is a slide of a picture in a book. Slide frame is marked: "Public Square. West Side 1895/Taken from Opera House/Note Livery Stable." Caption reads: "Looking west from Opera House."
Taken from the top of the Blessing/DePrez building, this photograph captured the SW and NW quadrants of Public Square in 1895. Horse drawn wagons are pulled up to hitching posts that were installed in the four quadrants in 1867. In the SW quadrant, businesses (from L to R) included Levinson Insurance & Jeweler, John Shelk Boots and Shoes, Flora Davis Clothing & Dry Good Store, A. L. Sparks Confectioner, Bishop & Pearson China and Tin, Singer Sewing, Pete Fetis Harness Shoop, C. W. Cheney's Saloon (Called "The Fan"), Walker Livery Stable, Floyd Trees' Boston Grocery, John Horst Boots and Shoes, Bookwalter Express & Adams American Express and First National Bank.
Businesses pictured in the west segment of the NW quadrant (from L to R) include Chicago Grocery, Sam McCrea Drugs and S. B. Morris Department Store.
