Public SquareDescription
Donation, 07/26/2005. Black and white photographic slide in landscape format.
Slide frame is marked: "Public Square. Entire Picture." Image is of a large crowd of people in the Public Square.
SN 9/18/2020 - Photo dates between 1875 and 1886. Reasoning: two business names featured in this and other photos from the same day are S.B. Morris and Gorgas & Strong Hardware. The period in which these two businesses were active at the same time was between 1875 and 1886.
This photograph captures the south segment of the Southeast quadrant of the Square and part of S. Harrison St. It is not known what event was being held at the time of the photograph.
At the time of this image, the Frailey and Gorgas Building, completed in 1864, was home to Gorgas & Strong Hardware Store. Next door, at the corner of S. Harrison St., stood another Gorgas building, later known as the Teal Building, and it housed multiple businesses including F. W. Horst's shoe store, Rock Bottoms, and the Tatmans Gallery. Solomon Gorgas built the corner structure shortly after the hardware store was completed and used it as a warehouse. Today, the buildings still stand and are the second and third oldest buildings on Public Square.
