The Shelby Hotel, which opened as the Ray House Hotel in 1857, was torn down in 1959. The following year, the single story storefronts seen in this photo were built in its place. In the mid 1900s, Todd-Bennett's suffered a terrible fire which destroyed the third floor of their building. What was left of the structure was repaired, as seen in this photo, and the business continued operation.
Businesses in this photo (from L to R) include First Federal Savings & Loan Association, Indiana Gas & Water, Wards Catalog Store, Paul's Shoes, J.G. DePrez Co. Bower & Son Electric Appliances and Todd-Bennett Clothier.Collection
