Description

A small, red felt banner with gold fringe at the bottom and a braided cold rope affixed to the top for hanging. In between two slits at the top of the banner is a thin wooden rod for hanging. The banner is bordered in red, with a white center. Inside the white center is a gold fabric star outlined with blue embroidery.

Context

This banner honors Dale Emmerson Poe (1922-1944), a Shelbyville native and U.S. National Guard member who was killed in action during World War II on the Filipino island of Luzon in May 1945. Gold Star Service Banner, denoting a family member who died during military operations, including those who died during World War I, World War II, or any subsequent period of armed hostilities in which the United States was engaged before July 1, 1958 while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict in which the United States is not a belligerent party against an opposing armed force.
