Red, White, & Blue Hand-Pieced QuiltDescription
Red, white and blue hand-pieced, hand-quilted quilt.Use
by Mazie Bennett Kemper (1879-1965) and her son, Weldon R. Kemper (1914-1992).Context
This quilt was made for the June 28, 1905 wedding of Mazie Maud Kemper by her mother, Mary Belle Rafferty Bennett.
A hand-written note with quilt reads, "Before I was married my mother Mary Belle Rafferty Bennett had 3 quilts quilted for me. I have never used any of them. She pieced and made them, ready to quilt. I gave Esther one, Hillis one and Weldon one. When he was half grown we were airing the good quilts and we asked him which one he wanted. He said if I can't have the red, white and blue one, I don't want any. So he won out with this and I can not see that his disposition has changed much since. This quilt was made in 1905. - Mazie B.
