military issue Springfield Rifle, model 1861; muzzle loader with a percussion cap style firing mechanism; stock is solid piece of walnut, approx. 44 3/4" long, the butt has a metal plate attached w/2 screws and a U.S. stamped on the plate and there is a metal nose cap, stock is uniform thickness until gets to area where there are spring leaf locks for the barrell bands and it narrows; barrell has a wedge sight located 1 1/4" from muzzle, breech has 5 side surface visible and then turns round, tang from breech is screwed to stock, there is a V.P. proof mark on the breech; there are 2 barrell bands; ramrod is 39 5/8" long and has a swell 4" from the pushing end; tirgger guard is attached to stock with 2 screws and has a place to attach a ring for a sling; lock is stamped behind the hammer "1863" there is a spread eagle between the hammer and the cone; and at bottom of lock is stamped letters but very faint, can make out 2 B"s in word. This Civil War weapon appears to be a contact arm. Attributing the manufacturing to Alfred Jenks & Son of Bridesburg, Pennsylvania; letters to believe that is could read Bridesburg.
